The Tampa Bay Young Republicans kicked off the new year and election season during their January general meeting on Jan. 28 at CopperFish. Seven candidates vying for a seat on the Hillsborough County School Board attended a panel discussion moderated by Glen Gilzean, himself a former member of the Pinellas County School Board.
The seven candidates who attended used the discussion as an opportunity to present their policy ideas and vision for Hillsborough’s schools. The candidates for District 6 who participated were: Dr. Stacy Hahn, Russ Patterson, Dipa Shah, Paula Meckley, Randy Toler, Alison Fernandez, and Asher Edleson. That seven of the nine candidates running for the district 6 seat attended shows the growing importance of the TBYRs. The primary election for the nonpartisan school board race is Aug. 26, with the general election scheduled for Nov. 4.
Topics of discussion ranged from differential pay for teachers to school safety. The diversity of opinion presented to the attendees of the panel made for an interesting night.
That the candidates spoke to a packed room underscored the importance of the Hillsborough County School Board, which has a budget of more than $3.2 billion. It also showed the value that TBYR members place on education in Hillsborough County.
February’s general meeting on Feb. 25th will again emphasize the importance of local races. The meeting will host candidates running for the Hillsborough County Commission. Each month we’re proving more and more that TBYR is the place in Tampa Bay to meet today’s leaders and become tomorrow’s.
